P20-1070411Drill spindle protection unitThe present invention relates to drilling equipment used inaircraft industry, more specifically to a drill spindleprotection unit of the type which encloses drill spindles. Back ground artThe drilling equipment is used for drilling holes indifferent parts of aircraft elements. The qualityrequirement of the drilled holes is particularly high inthis field due to the fact that failure of a critical partcould get very serious consequences. The drilling processis therefore closely monitored to avoid any failure duringmanufacturing of the aircraft. The equipment is during the drilling process rigidlycoupled to a template, which is mounted to the surface tobe drilled. The drill spindle length of such equipment isrelative large. The equipment has therefore to be fixatedat a certain distance from the template, which distanceshould be large enough to provide space for the totallength of drill spindle at the start of the process.Commonly a tube like support leg is used to provide forthis distance. This support leg needs to be rigid enough towithstand the radial and longitudinal forces during thedrilling process. The support leg is normally providedwith an opening for inspection of the drill spindle and toprovide exit for chips that have passed the template andare stuck in the drill splines during the drilling process. This inspection opening could however be dangerous for theoperator using the drilling equipment. The inspectionopening of the support leg is usually large enough toP20-1070411facilitate access of an operators hand. It is thereforeimportant to protect the operator from personal injury. According to prior art, drilling equipment is known from US2007/0041799, which discloses drilling equipment with aprotective sleeve. The sleeve protects the operator frominjury during the drilling process. A sleeve is arrangedaround the drill spindle and covers the entire length ofthe drill. The sleeve is further arranged to be adjustablein length (telescopic) such that the sleeve, during thedrilling process is pressed upwards into the protectionunit against a biasing force of a spring. The disadvantage of this system is that the drill spindleis not visible during, nor after operation. It is an object of the invention to solve the abovementioned drawbacks by means of providing a drill spindleprotection unit which facilitates proper inspection duringthe drilling process but which also protects the operatorfrom injury. The drilling protection unit according to the inventioncomprises of a tube like support leg with at least oneradial inspection opening. The unit is further adapted tobe mounted to a front-part of a drilling unit, forenclosing a drill spindle during operation. The unitfurther comprises a transparent protective sleeve which iscoaxially arranged with respect to said support leg suchthat inspection possibilities are obtained during the wholedrilling operation whilst protecting the operator frominjury. Detailed description of the inventionFig. 1 discloses the drilling equipment 10 with themounted drill spindle protection unit 1. The unit 1comprises a tube like support leg 2 with a coaxiallyarranged protective sleeve 7. The support leg 2 is on bothends provided with coupling means. One first coupling means4, for coupling the support leg 2 against the drillingequipment 10, and a second coupling means 5 for couplingagainst a template or the like. The drilling equipment 10comprises in brief a motor 12, a power transmission 13, anda non-exposed drill spindle which extends through theprotection unit 1 and a rear cover tube 14. Fig. 2 discloses the protection unit 1, which comprises atube like support leg 2, having at least one radialinspection opening 6. The inspection opening 6 has a properP20-10704Hsize to enable visual inspection. The support leg 2 has atleast one recess or groove 8 arranged in the support leg tofacilitate mounting of a strip made out of resilientmaterial. The resilient material is mounted in the recess 8and serves as a screen wiping strip 9. The resilientmaterial could be rubber or any other type of resilientmaterial that has wiping properties. The recess 8 extendsin the longitudinal direction of the support leg 2, and haslength that preferably both corresponds to the longitudinallength and longitudinal position of the inspection opening6. In a preferred embodiment is the support leg 2 providedwith two inspection openings 6 and four wiping strips 9,which are arranged adjacent to the said inspection opening6. Providing the wiping strips 9 in such a manner has theadvantage that the wiping strips 9 can dispose of thecooling liquid and other particle into the inspectionopenings 6. The wiping strip 9 could also be shorter thanthe longitudinal length of the inspection opening 6, buthas the disadvantage that only a part of the inspectionopening will be kept properly visible. Fig. 3 discloses the spindle protection unit l. Theprotective sleeve 7 is arranged coaxially around thesupport leg 2 and compresses the resilient wiping strip 9,in order to obtain a proper wiping effect. The sleeve 7, ismade out of transparent material so as to facilitateinspection during the drilling process. The sleeve 7 isfurther allowed to be rotated coaxially relative thesupport leg 2. The rotation of the sleeve 7 is performed bythe operator using the tool, thereby enabling the operatorto rinse/wipe the sleeve 7 from cooling liquid or drillingchips that could have become stuck to the inside of theP20-10704Hprotective sleeve 7 and which obstruct proper visualinspection. Fig. 4 and 5 disclose the support leg 2 wherein the firstend 4 of the support leg 2 is provided with a threadedportion 18 for receiving the coupling means 4. Saidcoupling means 4 is adapted to be coupled to the drillingequipment lO. The coupling means 4 also provides anabutment 16 for retaining the protective sleeve 7. Thesecond end 5 of the support leg is provided with couplingmeans for coupling of the support leg 2 to a template. Thecoupling means also provides for an abutment l7 on whichthe protective sleeve 7 is able to rest. The protective sleeve has in a preferred embodiment noapertures and is made out of a transparent material such asplexi glass but could be of any other suitable transparentmaterial as long as it is resistive to the cooling liquidsthat are used during the drilling process. The wiping stripcould in a further embodiment also be glued directly to thesupport leg 2, without the need for any recess 8 orgrooves.

Drill spindle protection unit (l) according toclaim l characterised in that the support leg (2) comprises at least one recess (8) extending along a section of the P20-10704H support leg (2), with a length corresponding to a sectionof the longitudinal length and position of the radialinspection opening (6), said recess (8) being provided witha strip (9) of resilient material so as to, upon rotationof the protective sleeve (7), provide for a screen wiping effect. Drill spindle protection unit (l) according toclaim l characterised in that the support leg (2) comprisesat least one recess (8) extending longitudinally along thesupport leg (2), with a length corresponding to thelongitudinal length and position of the radial inspectionopening (6), said recess being provided with a strip (9) ofresilient material so as to, upon rotation of the protective sleeve (7), provide for a screen wiping effect. Drill spindle protection unit (l) according toclaim 4 or 5 characterised in that the recess (8)comprising the strip (9) is provided on both sides of the at least one inspection opening (6) of the support leg (2). [7] 7. Drill spindle protection unit (l) according toany of the preceding claims characterised in that the strip (9) is provided adjacent to the inspection opening (6). [8] 8. Drill spindle protection unit (1) according toany of the preceding claims characterised in that the sleeve is made out of plexi glass. [9] 9.
